First Neutrino Message Sent Through Rock; Could One Travel Back In Time?:

“Researchers from the University of Rochester and North Carolina State University have for the first time sent a message using a beam of neutrinos — nearly massless particles that travel at almost the speed of light,” U of R reports.

And they pushed the message — which simply spelled out the world “Neutrino” — through “240 meters of stone” (787 feet).

What if we could shoot a message through the center of the planet and back in time?

That’s right, as Live Science puts it: “For the first time, scientists have used neutrinos — the exotic fundamental particles that routinely pass right through Earth — to send a message through the ground.” -Mark Memmott

“Explosive” Penguin With “Tremendous Speed” Escapes In Toyko

Tokyo is the home of the world’s latest animal celebrity: An “explosive” penguin equipped with “tremendous speed” who escaped the Tokyo Sea Life Park. The unnamed, one-year-old Humboldt penguin has already given newspapers a reason to cite Madagascar and snicker. According to the BBC the penguin busted out on Sunday, was last seen making its way to Tokyo Bay.

The AFP reports that the penguin “scaled a sheer rock face to escape from a Tokyo zoo. As one official at the aquarium said, ”Of course it can’t fly, but sometimes wildlife have an ‘explosive’ power when frightened by something. Maybe it ran up the rock after being surprised… It’s a bit of a struggle to catch it when it is swimming, because it swims at a tremendous speed.”

The photo is a long exposure shot of around 80,000 fans emptying the stadium after the match and heading towards the subway station. The mounted police regulate the crowd to prevent overcrowding in the station.

Later this year a team of researchers will try out the first bionic eye implant in the UK hoping to help a blind patient see for the first time. It is one of the extraordinary medical breakthroughs in the field, which are extending life by years and providing near-natural movement for those who have lost limbs.

Over the coming weeks, BBC News will explore the field of bionics in a series of features. We start with a selection of the latest scientific developments.

The Bionic Bodies series on the BBC News website will be looking at how bionics can transform people’s lives. We will meet a woman deciding whether to have her hand cut off for a bionic replacement and analyse the potential to take the technology even further, enhancing the body to superhuman levels. The series continues on Wednesday with a look at some of the earliest prosthetics from ancient Egypt.

The planet Mars will make its closest swing by Earth in more than two years tonight (March 5), just days after reaching a celestial milestone called “opposition” as it circles the sun.

Tonight, the orbit of Mars will bring the Red Planet within about 63 million miles (112 million kilometers) of Earth. At this time, Mars is closer to Earth than at any other point of its 26-month journey around the sun.
